Julie Visits Gitmo

At four months into my Gitmo assignment, it’s hard to find the words to express how happy I was to be reunited with Julie. While she wanted to take it easy and rest, I wanted to show her everything of interest here on this small Naval Base. The photo’s below are a small sample of the places we visited. In addition to these, we saw a spectacular view of the base from the tallest hill, once during the day, and once at night. Sadly, Julie’s visit ended too soon. I’ve just returned from the airport, where I had to bid her farewell.

Sunday at Gitmo

For some, I suppose, GITMO means detainee's and prison camps. For me, GITMO is my temporary home. I'm enjoying my time here. I took a long bike ride today, and here are some pictures I took along the way. The first is a section of the base, as viewed from the bike trail on top of a hill. I found this grotto along the main road. Here's a plaque, commemorating Christopher Columbus's visit in 1494. It was in the 90's today, and I had to stop often for water and rest. Here I am in the shade.

GITMO

I’m not quite sure how it happened, but I am now on assignment at Guantanamo Bay Cuba. And, since the military can be strict when it comes to posting pictures, I’ll avoid getting myself into trouble by posting just these two. One is an Iguana walking down the road (a common site here), and the other is my apartment. Actually, it’s a four-unit duplex. I’m in the lower-right one. Oh, and in case you want to write or send a care package. (I like DVD movies), here’s my address:

John Dalhaus c/o ISD
PSC 1005 Box 25
FPO, AE 09593

Flat-rate envelopes and boxes, available for free at the post office, are the best way to go.

And by the way, if you DON’T send me a package, you might get one from me with an Iguana in it! Not really. But I'll return the favor by sending a really-cool gitmo t-shirt or souvenir.

I'd love to hear from family via email too. For now, you can send email to: john.e.dalhaus@saic.com

We wrapped up the day with a treasure hunt. The treasure was closely guarded by dozens of large geese. We managed to outsmart them and locate the treasure.
